Soundgarden basically took rock n roll history, threw it in a blender with Seattle rain and poured out something that made flannel shirts look like battle armor. Then just for fun Cornell went and joined three guys from Rage Against the Machine, formed Audioslave and proved he could do the whole rock god thing again in a completely different band, like some kind of overachiever who didn't get the memo that one legendary career is usually enough for a person. Then did it again, alone. K dude.

Cornell had range in every sense of the word. He could scream like the world owed him money and then turn around and sound like he was gently reading you a bedtime story that happens to be about existential dread. That's not a skill you learn. That's a skill you're issued at birth by whatever cosmic HR department hands out generational talents.

We lost him in May 2017 and it still doesn't feel real, mostly because it feels like the universe made a scheduling error. That was nine years ago and we’re all still euphoria mourning. But today isn't about that. Today is about the guy who made screaming into a microphone look like the most reasonable form of self expression available to mankind. Who made the vaguest metaphors hit you in the soul like they spelled out your strongest beliefs.
